ICAR-NRC on Mithun conducted three days Training for Mithun Farmers of Arunachal Pradesh.

ICAR- NRC on Mithun under Tribal Sub-Plan conducted 3 days the Hands-on training program on Semi-Intensive Mithun Farming from 17th to 19th October 2019 for the farmers of Arunachal Pradesh. A total of nine mithun farmers from Mai Village, Yachuli block, Lower Subansari of Arunachal Pradesh participated in the program. The training was part of the Institute's initiative to create awareness among the mithun farmers on Semi-Intensive mithun farming with the objective to train them on the various aspects of the scientific mithun husbandry.
Mithun is primarily reared as a meat animal. Through this training, farmers were educated on the potential and diversified use of mithun under Semi-Intensive farming. Milking capacity of mithun and draught power were demonstrated during the training. The Scientists delivered the lectures on various topics like care and management of young, pregnant and lactating animals, selection of mithun breeding bull and breeding management, feeding management and fodder resources for mithun, health management, and entrepreneurship development.
During these three days, farmers mostly spent their time in the Mithun Farm where they witnessed routine farm activities, animal handling, identification of animals, blood collection and other activities including detection of heat, semen collection, and milking in mithun. The farmers also had the unique experience of tasting mithun milk for the first time.
The 3-day long program concluded with farmers sharing their views on what they have learned from the training which includes proper care and management of mithun animals in a semi-intensive system. They have also shared the knowledge of the importance of mithun in Nishi tribe. Nishi tribe rear mithun to fulfill the need for children's education, for paying medical bills and also during feast after selling the animals.
Dr. KesangYeshiTukshipa, Project Associate (Livestock) from NEIDA acted as a facilitator. From ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Dr. Sapunii Stephen Hanah, Scientist (LPM) and Dr. LaishramSunitibala Devi, Scientist (LPM)co-ordinated the training program.
