Mithun Institute organized Mithun Mela at Tening village of Peren District


On 19th February 2020, ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medzipheeema organized a one day "Mithun Mela-cum-Technology-Injection Programme" at Tening Village of Peren district. ICAR-NRCM is the only research organization of the world engaged in the research and development of the magnificent species of North-Eastern Hilly states, Mithun (Bos frontalis). The Institute under its Tribal sub-plan activity is striving to popularized the scientific semi-intensive mithun rearing as an alternative means of livelihood.
As part of the Mela, an Animal Health cum Vaccination Camp was organized for the Mithun farmers of Tening and Nzau Village. A total of 48 mithuns were vaccinated against FMD. Medicines were distributed for the health and welfare of the mithuns. A Farmers Scientist Interaction was also organized to address the problems faced by the mithun farmers. A Mithun competition was held wherein farmers are awarded for bringing the best mithun under different categories.
Mr. Rhosietho Ngouri, ADC, Tening and Special Guest appreciated the initiative of ICAR-NRC on Mithun to select Tening as a venue of Mela and emphasized the socio-cultural value of mithun in the tribal tradition.
Earlier the Guest of Honour, Prof. Capt. G.D.J. Rao, Dean, College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Jalukie in his inaugural speech applauded the help rendered by ICAR-NRC on Mithun to Tening Mithun Society which resulted in a significant increase of the mithun population. Prof. Capt. Rao urged the gathering to continue rendering their support in the Institute's efforts to conserve the animal at its natural habitat through scientific animal husbandry practices.
The Mela was attended by 552 farmers from Tening, New Nzau, Nzau, Nsong, Ngualand, and Bamsiakalo Villages.
The Mela was coordinated by Dr. Kezhavito Vupru, CTO and attended by Dr. J. K Chamuah and Sh. Kamni Paia Biam, Scientists of ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland.
