Mithun Mela cum Technology Awareness Programme held in Ledum village, East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh


Indian Council of Agricultural Research - National Research Centre on Mithun (ICAR-NRC on Mithun), under Tribal sub-plan (TSP), in collaboration with Dept. of Vety. & A. H. Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh along with Ledum Village Authority organized 'Mithun Mela cum Technology Awareness Programme ' in Ledum Village, East-Siang District at (near Pasighat), Arunachal Pradesh on 12th February 2019. While inaugurating the mela, Hon'ble MLA Shri. Tatung Jamoh lauded the efforts of ICAR-NRC on Mithun in popularizing the scientific rearing of mithun and organizing such events regularly in the area. He recalled that it is the third such programme being organized by the institute, the earlier ones were in Takelalung and Miren village of the district. Sri Jamoh urged the farmers to adopt the scientific rearing of mithun for more profit. He congratulated the village GBs to motivate the farmers to bring a large number of mithun in the mela site. Earlier Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR-NRCM apprised the gathering about the several initiatives of the Institute towards popularizing scientific semi-intensive rearing of mithun and its conservation. Dr. Mitra stressed the need for use of improved mithun bulls as well as the exchange of bulls with the neighboring villages to avoid inbreeding. The Mela was attended by 400 farmers. The farmers brought more than 100 mithuns to the mela site which were vaccinated against FMD and BQ. The villagers also put up several stalls to display their products. ICAR-NRC on Mithun also displayed its technologies and package of practices. Several competitions were organized to adjudge the best mithun bulls, mithun cows and mithun heifers. The cash prizes and certificates were given to the winners. In order to promote semi-intensive mithun rearing several inputs including barbed-wire, CGI sheet, gu boots, rain coat, and Travis were also handed over to the Mithun Rearing Society of the village. In the afternoon, an interactive session, the scientist-farmer meet was also organized. During the interaction, the need of regular vaccination, supplementation with the mineral mixture, use of good bulls and conservation of the biggest bulls for breeding purpose, diversified use of mithun as a source of meat, milk, leather as well draft were elaborated. Among others Guest of Honour Shri. Tapong Talog, Ex-Director, Dept. of Education, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh; DVO Pasighat, Dr. Taggo, Circle Officer of Bilet Block Smt Oni Padun, and Shri Tayam Dupak, GB, Ledum Village also graced the programme. From ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Dr. MH Khan, Principal Scientist (Animal Reproduction) and Dr. Kezhavitu Vurpu, CTO coordinated the event. Notably, Ledum is one of the cleanest villages in the district having 112 households and a population of little more than 500. It is one of the villages in the districts with high-density mithun population where people are mostly depending on mithun farming as a viable economic activity.
